How to Monetize YouTube Shorts: Every Way a Short Earns, and the Rules Behind It

Last updated: ·

You monetize YouTube Shorts by joining the YouTube Partner Program, which pays you a share of the ads shown between Shorts in the Shorts Feed. Beside that pool, a Short can earn from Super Thanks, members-only Shorts, YouTube Shopping and brand deals. Ad revenue opens at 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days (20 million for new applicants from 1 February 2027); Super Thanks, memberships and Shopping open at 500 subscribers, three public uploads and 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. This guide covers each way a Short earns, the Creator Pool, the 2027 changes, the policies that stop Shorts money and a plan for a faceless channel. Its sources, YouTube's own pages checked in October 2026, are listed at the end.

Can you make money from YouTube Shorts?

Yes, YouTube Shorts can make money in six ways: a share of the ads shown between Shorts in the Shorts Feed, a share of YouTube Premium revenue, Super Thanks, members-only Shorts, YouTube Shopping and brand deals. Ad and Premium money is not paid per Short but pooled each month and split by engaged views.

Ads and Premium need the Partner Program's full tier. Super Thanks, memberships and Shopping open at 500 subscribers, and a brand deal you arrange yourself needs no YouTube threshold. Super Chat, Super Stickers and gifts belong to live streams, not Shorts.

What are the exact eligibility paths for Shorts money?

Shorts money has two eligibility tiers. Ad and Premium revenue needs 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, or 4,000 long-form watch hours in 12 months. The expanded Partner Program, offered in the countries and regions YouTube lists for it, needs 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in 90 days, and 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days or 3,000 watch hours, so a Shorts-only channel can qualify on views alone.

Both tiers also need an eligible country, no active Community Guidelines strikes, 2-Step Verification, advanced features and a linked AdSense for YouTube account, and applying starts a review of the whole channel, which typically takes about a month. As of October 2026, each feature adds conditions:

  • Ads and Premium: accept the Shorts Monetization Module; only views from that day on are paid.
  • Super Thanks and memberships: 18 or over, the Commerce Product Module, a channel not set as made for kids.
  • Shopping: the Partner Program at its subscriber threshold, not made for kids; the affiliate program also needs one of 14 countries and a non-music channel.
  • Brand deals: no threshold; YouTube's marketplace, Creator Partnerships, needs the Partner Program and 18 or over.

What counts as a qualified Shorts view?

A qualified Shorts view is an engaged view of a public Short in the Shorts Feed: a viewer who chose to keep watching, not every play. Eligibility and Shorts revenue both run on engaged views, not on the public view count.

Since 31 March 2025 the public count adds a view every time a Short starts or replays, with no minimum watch time, and YouTube Analytics keeps the older measure as Engaged views. Views of private, unlisted or deleted Shorts, of ad campaigns and of image posts never count, and Shorts watch time never counts toward watch hours. Compare the two numbers in Analytics: only the engaged one moves you toward 3 or 10 million, and artificial views, such as from bots, are not paid.

How is Shorts ad revenue shared? The Creator Pool, step by step

Shorts ad revenue is paid from a monthly pool, not per video. YouTube adds up the revenue from ads shown between Shorts in the Shorts Feed, sets part aside for music licensing, and splits the rest, the Creator Pool, among monetizing creators by their share of engaged views in each country. You keep 45% of your allocation.

  • Music: a Short without music sends all of its revenue to the pool; with one track, half; with two tracks, a third. The rest covers music licensing.
  • Allocation: if your Shorts get 1 million of a country's 100 million eligible engaged views, you get 1% of that country's pool, whether or not you used music.
  • Premium: Premium and Premium Lite revenue for Shorts is split by your share of subscribers' Shorts views, also at 45%.
  • Left out: ads shown before the first Short plays, navigation-page ads, image posts, and views of Shorts from channels that are not monetizing.

How much do YouTube Shorts pay per 1,000 views?

YouTube publishes no fixed Shorts rate, because each payout is a share of a pool that changes by month and by country. What 1,000 engaged views earn depends on ad spend in the Shorts Feed where your viewers live, on how many engaged views other monetizing creators got there, and on how much music the feed used.

The 45% is fixed; the pool and your slice of it are not, so nobody can promise a Shorts rate. Measure your own: YouTube Analytics shows estimated daily Shorts Feed ad revenue and your RPM, which for Shorts is your revenue after YouTube's share per 1,000 engaged views. YouTube Studio's Content tab marks a Short that is not earning with a No ad earnings notice. Creator-reported ranges are in our guide to faceless channel earnings.

Earnings are paid through AdSense for YouTube: a month's earnings are issued between the 21st and 26th of the next month, once your balance is over the payment threshold.

What changes for Shorts money on 1 February 2027?

From 1 February 2027, a channel needs 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days to earn Shorts ad and Premium revenue in a given month. The 90 days end on the 15th of the month before. Below that, you stay in the Partner Program, long-form keeps earning, and Shorts revenue resumes automatically once you cross back over.

The 500-subscriber tier and the 45% share stay as they are. What else changes, with the detail in our guide to the 2027 monetization requirements:

  • New applicants need 1,000 subscribers plus 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days or 8,000 watch hours in a year; current partners keep their status.
  • Targeted Shorts ads: when an advertiser targets five or fewer channels, eligible creators earn 45% of that ad's net revenue directly, on top of the pool.
  • YouTube plans incentive programmes for channels under 10 million views, such as Shopping bonuses, brand deal incentives and boosts for starting trends; details are pending as of October 2026.
  • From the same date, a partner counts as active with 1 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, or five Shorts uploaded every 90 days, among other routes.
  • Current partners must accept the updated modules in YouTube Studio by 31 January 2027, or those earnings stop on 1 February.

How do Super Thanks and members-only Shorts earn?

From the 500-subscriber tier, Super Thanks lets a viewer pay for an animation over your Short, seen only by them, plus a highlighted comment; you receive 70% after taxes and fees. Turn it on in the Supers tab of YouTube Studio's Earn section and it appears on every eligible Short, but not on Shorts that are, among others, made for kids, unlisted, claimed or have comments turned off.

Members-only Shorts are a perk for paying channel members: up to 60 seconds, shown in members' Shorts and Home feeds without a notification. They must be fully original and cannot use third-party music, including the Shorts music library.

Can you use affiliate links and YouTube Shopping in Shorts?

Plain affiliate links do not work in Shorts: since 31 August 2023, URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments are not clickable. What viewers can click to leave a Short: YouTube Shopping product tags, the related video link and, on a reported brand deal, one link to the brand's site.

Shopping lets you tag products from your own store or, through the affiliate program, from other brands; as of October 2026 the affiliate program runs in 14 countries, including the United States, Brazil, India, Indonesia and Japan. Each brand sets the commission per product, paid through AdSense for YouTube 60 to 120 days after the purchase, with returns reversed. YouTube's tips: tag products in the order they appear and say you earn a commission.

In any country, if your channel has advanced features, set a related video on each Short: a clickable link under your channel handle to one of your own videos, such as a long-form video whose description can carry clickable links.

How do brand deals work on Shorts?

A brand deal on a Short is paid by the sponsor, so it needs no view threshold; what YouTube requires is disclosure. Mark any sponsored Short with the paid promotion setting, which shows viewers a label. With the move to a Branded Content Policy announced in September 2026, YouTube is also rolling out systems that spot undeclared promotions and may add the label itself; you remain responsible for disclosing.

A reported brand deal can carry one link to the brand's site, shown on mobile as a sticker and in the description. YouTube Creator Partnerships connects brands with Partner Program creators aged 18 or over in 24 countries and regions as of October 2026, and lets you set separate rates for Shorts where its Studio tab is available.

Which policies stop a Short from earning?

Past the thresholds, Shorts money is lost to the content rules: reused content, inauthentic or mass-produced content, off-putting content, AI personas on sensitive topics, and copyright claims. Reviewers look at the channel as a whole, and a pattern of violations can cost monetization on the entire channel.

AI tools themselves are allowed: YouTube counts using AI to visualize a character and story you invented as monetizable. Disclosure is a separate duty: answer Yes under AI use in YouTube Studio when a Short shows a realistic scene that never happened, alters footage of a real place or event, makes a real person say or do something they did not, or uses AI-generated music. The label does not limit reach or earnings, but repeatedly skipping it can cost your place in the programme; our guide to YouTube's AI content policy has the cases. What does stop Shorts money:

  • Reused: unedited film or TV clips, reuploads of other creators' videos, Shorts compiled from other sites, or narration that only reads text you did not write. Permission does not change this.
  • Inauthentic, which the policy page now files as generic or repetitive: Shorts made from one template, slideshows with little narrative, AI content from generic templates.
  • Off-putting: unrelated AI clips stitched together to shock, repeated scenes of animals in peril, realistic fake disasters or celebrity deaths.
  • AI personas: a channel where an AI-made expert gives health, legal, financial or political advice cannot monetize.
  • Claims and suitability: a Short over one minute with claimed content is not eligible, and only Shorts that meet the advertiser-friendly guidelines are paid.

What is a realistic plan for a faceless Shorts channel?

A realistic plan aims for the 500-subscriber tier first and treats the Creator Pool as a later bonus. Three million views in 90 days is about 33,000 engaged views a day; 10 million is about 111,000 a day, and from February 2027 that becomes a monthly condition.

  • Pick a niche with a hundred distinct Shorts in it, and skip the formats the policies name.
  • Publish one or two checked Shorts a day: a real hook, correct facts, a fresh title.
  • Track Engaged views; divide your 90-day total by 90 to see the gap to 33,000 or 111,000.
  • At 500 subscribers, three public uploads and 3 million views, apply, turn on Super Thanks and tag products where Shopping is open to you.
  • Link each Short to a related long-form video: it earns watch hours, carries clickable links and is untouched by the 10 million rule.
  • Line up a sponsor or an affiliate offer early; neither depends on the pool.

How does FacelessCast fit a Shorts channel, and what does it leave to you?

FacelessCast makes the Shorts; YouTube decides whether they earn. Type a topic and the studio returns a 45 to 60 second 9:16 Short with a hook-first script, AI narration, a visual under every sentence, word-synced captions, music, a cover and a publish kit. Draft first lets you edit the script and scene plan before rendering, and series keep characters consistent so episodes continue a story instead of repeating a template.

Stock-footage Shorts are unlimited on every plan, from $10 a month; AI video, where every scene moves, costs about 140 credits for 30 seconds at standard quality. There is no free plan. FacelessCast does not upload, tag products or answer the AI use question for you, and it cannot promise monetization.

Frequently asked questions

How many views do you need to monetize YouTube Shorts?

For ad revenue, 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days plus 1,000 subscribers, or 20 million for new applicants from 1 February 2027. Super Thanks, memberships and Shopping need 500 subscribers, three public uploads and 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, in countries with the expanded programme.

How much does YouTube pay for 1 million Shorts views?

There is no fixed rate. Engaged views earn an allocation from each country's monthly Creator Pool and you keep 45% of it, so the amount moves with ad demand, audience country and music use. YouTube Analytics shows your own Shorts RPM.

Can you monetize YouTube Shorts without 1,000 subscribers?

Partly. At 500 subscribers, three public uploads and 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days you can earn from Super Thanks, memberships and Shopping, but not from ads. Brand deals you arrange yourself need no threshold.

Does using music in a Short lower your earnings?

Not your share: you are paid on all your engaged views at 45% either way. Music used across the feed shrinks the pool itself, a Short with a copyright claim cannot carry Super Thanks, and members-only Shorts cannot use third-party music.

Can I put affiliate links in YouTube Shorts?

Typed links in a Short's description or comments are not clickable. Use YouTube Shopping product tags where the affiliate program runs, or a related video pointing to a long-form video whose description carries the links.

Can AI-generated Shorts be monetized?

Yes, when each Short is original: YouTube lists using AI to visualize a story you invented as monetizable. Generic AI templates, stitched shock clips and AI experts giving health, legal or money advice are not, and realistic AI scenes must be disclosed.
